Educating People, Transforming Organizations
As culture workers, we have incredible power to shape social perceptions of disability. These seminars are designed to offer an introduction to the topic in a supportive, collegial environment where asking questions is encouraged.
Disability Representation 101
In this hour-long seminar, we’ll discuss the basics of disability politics and representation: where our popular ideas of disability come from, the language we use about disability, common representational tropes, and how to use our position as culture workers to challenge these narratives of disability.
Format: 40 minute presentation + 20 minute discussion/ Q+A
Duration: 1 hour
Disability History and Culture
In this two hour seminar, we’ll discuss the history and context of disability oppression in North America, as well as the history of disability rights and disability justice movements. With that foundation, we then explore representations of disability in popular culture, common tropes, and disability counterculture.
Format: Two 30 minute presentations with 20 minute discussion/Q+A and one ten minute break.
Duration: 2 hours
Ask and Answer
Designed for small groups, this is a facilitated discussion to talk through some more granular, team-specific trends, concerns, and questions and deepen shared learning. This can only be booked as a follow up to either of the two presentations above.
Private Consultations
1:1 Consultations to discuss specific concerns, workshop issues, and deepen understanding. This is also helpful if you think you have a problem but aren’t sure where to start; a consultation offers a place to begin your learning and design a plan for your group or organization.
